Therapeutic Recreation

At the Pediatric Center, our Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRSs) carefully plan activities for our children that help to provide emotional support by:

  • Improving self esteem
  • Creating opportunities for participants to “shine”
  • Decreasing anxiety/stress
  • Fostering feelings of usefulness/purposefulness
  • Having a stake in creating one’s own environment
  • Decreasing depression
  • Providing freedom of choice/decision making
  • Developing learning skills for independent leisure pursuits
  • Decreasing isolative behavior in withdrawn children

Some therapeutic recreation activities offered at the Pediatric Center include:

  • Arts and crafts
  • Active games
  • Community outings/integration
  • Cognitive games
  • Dance programs
  • Gardening/horticulture
  • Gentle exercise/movement
  • Musical groups
  • Sensory activities
  • Special events

CTRSs plan and implement leisure activities like arts and crafts, music, sports, games and field trips to help improve the functional skills of the children. They start by assessing the child’s needs and abilities in order to design an appropriate program.

Once a child’s needs are assessed, their therapeutic recreation specialists work with them in goal-oriented programs and document their progress to share with families/caregivers along the way. Our strong philosophical base is both child and family-centered. Our goal is to ensure that each and every resident:

  • Receives the opportunity to explore through play
  • Experiences enhanced leisure activities
  • Has multiple outlets for fun and relaxation

Therapeutic activities provide recreational opportunities to enhance our residents’ quality of life. Our program provides a full array of various activities seven days a week, including:

  • Celebratory parties
  • Community trips
  • Family-fun activities
